Metal arbors: advantages and disadvantages

Today, interest in metal gazebos has grown immeasurably. Such structures are no longer considered to be something heterogeneous in a private landscape, finding a lot of advantages in metal products in comparison with wooden ones.

However, we will begin with the shortcomings of the arbors made of metal. There are only two of them:

  1. It is believed that due to the ability of the metal to heat up strongly in the gazebos it will be very hot. There are two ways to eliminate this problem: make the gazebo as openwork as possible by planting nearby climbing plants, or use the gazebo only in the evening or morning hours, relaxing during the day under another canopy.
  2. The metal rusts, which requires constant care of the gazebo. But it is worth remembering that with modern high-quality paints you will have to repaint the arbor much less often, moreover, there are compounds with which you can paint rusty structures without first cleaning the metal.

And now let's talk about the advantages of metal arbors, which are much more than minuses. First of all, it is a wide price range of models, from elite forged gazebos to democratic welded from reinforcing bars. You can further reduce the price by using a tented roof or a lightweight construction in the form of a rare lattice for natural fencing with climbing plants. Other design advantages include:

Ability to install gazebos on any site, including a lawn, gravel embankment, paved or paved area of the yard. A gazebo made of metal can be fixed with embedded parts on concrete supports, simply buried in the ground or mounted on top of it, depending on the design. The charming model Donna Lynn, as we see, is located at the end of the garden path on a small gravel site.

The gazebo can emphasize the status of the owner, becoming a luxurious decoration of the yard. And these are not only skillful forged models. COPPER TECH CONSTRUCTION, INC., For example, used a copper-roof construction on its client site.

Openwork metal arbors are perfect as a backdrop for special occasions, for example, a semicircular model from Hayneedle, specially designed for wedding ceremonies in the garden.

Pergolas made of metal look great both against the background of the natural landscape, and opposite the facade of the house. They can be installed in any zone of a private territory, and if you wish, even moved to a new place, like a small arbor from Hayneedle in the style of a classic rotunda, which is priced at $ 20,000.

  • Finally, metal models are easy to give the desired color in accordance with the used range of landscape design. The bright blue arbor from COLECCION ALEXANDRA is a great example of creating a focal point in a private courtyard.

Metal arbors can be designed in any style, so they will find a place in the gardens and courtyards of different designs. Such constructions are safely combined with hearths and summer kitchens, since they are not afraid of fire. Metal models last longer than wooden ones, they require much less repair, so the desire to use such arbors in your own yard is justified.

Design features

Most suburban areas are now decorated with gazebos. Structures made of forged metal look especially elegant. They fit particularly well into the general landscape if forging is present in the decoration of windows in a residential building and garden furniture. A building with a light and openwork design in the hot summer protects from scorching sunlight, but against strong gusts of wind or heavy rain it is powerless. If an experienced craftsman takes on the job, the construction is solid and especially beautiful.

To relax in a wrought-iron gazebo with barbecue facilities in cool autumn or early spring, it is closed. Usually they are built on a foundation so that it can withstand the weight of heavy metal. The base for massive structures is made monolithic, reinforced concrete slabs are used. Small openwork designs are mounted on a wooden platform or placed on a pillow of gravel.

The sizes, design and shape of country houses made of metal are very different. They are limited only by the imagination of the master. Knowing how to use a welding machine, you can make such a gazebo yourself. First, a metal frame is made for her, to which later details of the decor are welded. Below are photos of successful examples of forged arbors.

Advantages and disadvantages

Country buildings made of wrought metal are always unique. Usually they are made in a single copy. Such buildings are suitable for important business meetings in nature, friendly gatherings or pleasant leisure time with your family. Many hold celebrations in them. To make it easier to choose, they will learn in advance about the advantages and disadvantages of forged designs.

  • they go well with green spaces, ornamental flower beds, fruit trees and berry bushes,
  • openwork walls do not block the access of fresh air,
  • metal in harmony with wood of different species, red brick, natural stone,
  • with good care, such buildings do not need frequent repairs and remain strong for decades,
  • a different foundation is suitable for them, some buildings are installed on the grass,
  • without fear of fire they place a barbecue, fireplace, hearth or stove,
  • the forged metal is almost not deformed, so the openwork elements retain their shape for a long time,
  • they are successfully combined with buildings of any style.

There are also disadvantages of wrought-iron summer houses, but there are few of them:

  1. When using different metals in construction, the likelihood of structural failure due to strong heating increases. Therefore, whenever possible, the arbor is placed in the shade under the crown of trees.
  2. If the metal is not covered with a protective layer, moisture that has fallen on it provokes corrosion. Therefore, such a building needs special care. To protect against rust, the parts are painted with metal paint or an anti-corrosion coating is applied.
  3. Forged products are always high price. The construction of such a gazebo is especially expensive if hot-forging was used. Patterns made using this method are more subtle, graceful, convey the smallest details.

Types of arbors

Among all the small architectural forms for giving, arbors are the most common. Therefore, different types and styles of such structures are distinguished. By design features they are divided into open and closed.

Open are structures in which there are no spans between the pillars. Another option for an outdoor summer cottage is a space closed to the middle of the height of the gazebo. Such structures fully provide protection only from the sun. They are completely blown by the wind, rain can get into them. But such buildings are found in summer cottages very often. The reason for this is high decorativeness. A true master is able to make a lace pattern from a piece of metal that adorns any area.

Closed buildings have solid walls, most often they are additionally glazed. Such country outbuildings look especially rich. In a closed building, you can relax in any weather with a big company. Having set the barbecue inside, cook food on an open fire. If necessary, the enclosed building is equipped with additional heating, conduct water and electricity.

According to the shape of the base

The shape of the country structure is different:

  1. In rectangular buildings are assembled by a large company. Inside there is a place for barbecue and a long dining table with chairs. For convenience there are sofas. Such buildings are especially suitable for special occasions as they accommodate many guests.
  2. Buildings with an oval and round base are especially beautiful among the trees in the garden, if their supports are surrounded by climbing plants. Inside such a building, a barbecue or stove does not look appropriate. Therefore, the center is set next to the gazebo.
  3. Sometimes arbors make complex shapes. Such models are popular with fans of original products. Often they are built only for aesthetic perception. They are not suitable for practical use.

Typically, at the dachas, buildings with forged parts are made rectangular or square. This form is convenient, beautiful, goes well with any landscape design. A good place to install such a structure is the garden, the shore of the pond.

By style

The gazebo is usually installed on a hill. This is a light building, which offers a beautiful view of the surroundings. Also, a belvedere is understood to mean a small tower with open apertures or glazed windows. Lightweight design is not only on the ground. In ancient castles, such structures were erected on large balconies or terraces.

The base of the belvedere is made of concrete slabs or blocks, so that the building stands much higher than the ground level. Stairs are laid at the entrance and forged rails are installed on them, in harmony with the general style of the arbor. As decoration for the belvedere, curly plants are planted next to its supports. This design is suitable for nature lovers.

Pergola is a canopy formed by living vines. On hot summer days, such a gazebo creates a good shelter from sunlight. Such a gazebo consists of several arches or sections connected by crossbeams. It necessarily contains arc elements and ceilings in the form of gratings. There are also support posts. Pergolas are made high. Some designs reach a height of 260 cm. The main purpose of such arbors is to create shade and support for climbing plants. Modern pergolas with wrought-iron decor adorn the recreation area in the country, block unsightly outbuildings, are part of the gate or gate to the garden.

The most common type of wrought iron gazebos is called altanka. They are placed in open areas to provide access to the building from different sides. Such arbors are made with open apertures or closed, with a different shape of the base. They are surely richly decorated with forged details.

Altanka set on a flat surface. The base is laid out from natural stone, floor ceramic tiles or made from wooden planks. The area of such a structure is from 5 to 20 m². This is a compact building with a light roof and furniture set inside. This gazebo is suitable for relaxing, drinking tea or eating outdoors. Therefore, forged tea table with curly legs will be appropriate in it.

Altanks are made with a different roof:

  1. The most common are altankas with a classic hipped roof, consisting of several triangles.
  2. Buildings with a gable roof are less common. Typically, such a roof is used for rectangular arbors.
  3. Sometimes there are arbors with a curved roof resembling a Chinese pagoda. Such a roof is very effect. Although the design is complex, it is often used.

Self construction

Before starting the main construction work, they choose a place for the installation of the altanka. The area of the summer cottage and the presence of space free of buildings and green spaces are taken into account. For a secluded holiday, choose a place in the back of the garden, away from the eyes of strangers. The extension is erected in the shade of trees, so that on sultry days the inside is kept cool. If the building is intended for cooking on an open fire, it is installed near the apartment building and kitchen. The structure attached to the wall of the house replaces a half-open veranda.

Having chosen the most suitable place, perform a drawing in size. After buying the material and tools. For the manufacture of forged parts, mild steel with a carbon content of 13 to 15% is used. A higher concentration makes the metal tough. Forging and processing such material is difficult. Usually forged elements are made of iron, steel or copper.

To work, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • pegs and twine for marking,
  • building level,
  • roulette,
  • hacksaw,
  • nails
  • self-tapping screws
  • fittings,
  • garden drill
  • drill with metal drills,
  • welding machine,
  • grinding machine
  • hammer drill.

Calculations and markup

The selected site for the construction is measured. The easiest way is to make a small altanka of 3x3 m on your own. Based on the data and the previously created drawing, markup is made on the ground. For this, pegs are driven in at corner points and twine is stretched between them. The supports are installed exactly according to the marking, observing the same distance.

Frame

Under the forged altanka, the foundation is being erected. If the project does not provide for the foundation, install support posts from the profile pipe, pre-concreted. Then they retreat from the floor level of 80 cm and weld the lower bridges of the same material to the support posts. Having retreated 10 cm from the ground level, fasten the belt for welding. For it, a profiled pipe measuring 4x2.5 cm is used. From above, the support posts are connected by jumpers, welding them to the end of the pipes. They then lay the roof. In the middle of the transverse pipes, the supports for the future roof are fixed by welding. Then the arches are mounted, leaving the free end hanging down to a length of 20 to 25 cm.

Roof

Roofing material is laid on the installed arches. This takes into account the load perceived by the rafters, the total weight of the roof with additional equipment. The weather conditions in the region are also important. For forged altanoks, cellular polycarbonate, wood, and glass are suitable as roofing materials. The most practical first option. Polycarbonate sheets are durable, flexible, and serve for decades with proper handling. The material is coated with a protective layer from ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, the metal structure underneath is protected from heat.

To ensure that the gazebo is evenly coated, the surface is checked with a building level. If necessary, carry out the alignment. Then the prepared site is carefully rammed and poured with concrete mortar. The flooring is laid on top of any suitable material. Suitable flooring, ceramic tiles, porcelain stoneware, natural stone. Then all the seams are rubbed and the resulting surface is treated with protective agents.

Finish

All metal structures without special protection are subject to corrosion. Therefore, the built altanka must be coated on top with a special metal paint. To protect against moisture and other negative environmental influences, the surface is covered with a thin layer of non-ferrous metal: copper, brass, silver. On top, you can varnish the structure to give it a noble shine.

A wrought-iron arbor decorates a summer cottage and turns it into a paradise. You can do it yourself, order from a master or buy a ready-made version. To decorate such buildings, climbers, evergreens and conifers and flowers are used. Having shown imagination, you can make an extension of an unusual shape - in the form of a carriage, ship, Chinese house.

Advantages and disadvantages

Outdoor metal gazebo has many advantages, one of which is its strength, due to the basic material of the structure. In addition, the frame structure has a relatively light weight and can be placed on soils with any bearing capacity. Another significant advantage of this design is its mobility. Even if the gazebo is not portable, but installed on certain supports, it can be dismantled in its entirety, transferred and installed on similar piles in another place.

Due to its high strength, the metal can take various forms, embodying any design ideas, while it does not need massiveness to maintain structural integrity. Thus, the outwardly unpretentious material in the hands of the master serves as the basis for creating a real work of art. The main operational qualities vary depending on the specific type of metal, but their common advantages include:

  • Durable operational period.
  • High resistance to weather events. Of course, iron will require a protective layer of paint against moisture, but neither a hurricane wind, nor hail, nor even a branch that fell from a tree, and with a certain thickness of the profile and the tree itself can not do devastating damage to the structure.

  • Tremendous mechanical strength. Designs are not afraid of shock, pressure or vibration. You don’t have to worry that in the process of having fun someone accidentally ruins one of the pillars. To do this, you need a welding machine or “bulgarian” with an abrasive wheel.
  • Fire safety. Even aluminum, not to mention steel, melts at a temperature that is almost impossible to create at home.
  • Simplicity in manufacturing and installation. Of course, if you want to decorate the arbor with elaborate forging or create a complex structure of an unusual shape, you will need the help of the appropriate specialists, but a simple option is affordable for a person with basic skills in handling a grinder and a drill.
  • Low cost of the main frame. To create a gazebo on average, you need a little material, in addition, it does not need a serious foundation, which also saves money.

In addition to the positive aspects, metal structures have their drawbacks. These include:

  • Exposure to corrosive processes. If an aluminum or galvanized profile is selected as the main material for the gazebo, this problem disappears. But when using most steel alloys, it will be necessary to apply a protective color or periodically renew it. The main thing to remember is that it is easier to repaint or tint in time than to deal with metal that has begun to corrode.
  • The need for welding. Of course, a design using a bolted connection of the profile is possible, but in many cases, the use of welding to connect the elements is required. It is worth noting that the bolted model has the ability to be completely disassembled and can be transported to another place without the use of large vehicles, however, the development and implementation of such a project is also more difficult.
  • The high cost of decorative elements. If you want to decorate the gazebo with beautiful wrought iron or other metal products, you will have to spend money on the work of the master.

Projects

At the first stage, a sketch is drawn, which in the future will be the basis for the formation of the engineering plan, consistent with the desired parameters of the structure. First of all, such factors are taken into account:

  • the area that is allocated for the construction of the gazebo,
  • the number of seats that the gazebo should provide,
  • estimated budget
  • whether the gazebo will be equipped with an open fire source, such as a barbecue, stove, grill, etc.

Further, the construction should be consistent with the rules for the construction of small structures:

  • minimum wall height - 1.9 m,
  • the height of the side rails is about 1 m,
  • recommended height of open space above the fences - from 1 m,
  • minimum overhang protrusion - 20 cm,
  • minimum slope of the roof (for a single-pitched) - 10 degrees,
  • the depth of the foundation is 50 cm per 2 m of the height of the structure.

It is also important to decide whether the gazebo will be open or closed, in which part of the yard will be located. The project should indicate all the parameters of the gazebo: the length of each element, the location of the entrance, supports, type of roof, etc.. The design of the future structure, the execution of decorative elements, the material and color of the roof and other details should also be described. For this, several drawings are compiled - some serve engineering purposes, others decorative. Placing all the parameters in one drawing will make it overloaded and difficult to read. An alternative is to order a project in a specialized bureau, in which case the desired parameters are indicated. After which the company creates and submits for approval the N-th number of possible options.

Garden country canopies are quite popular today. Such a summer structure, for example, a hexagonal size of 4 by 6 m, can have a two-story version.

Materials

Now canopies for giving from a professional leaf, a metal profile, a metal framework, iron and combined models are popular.

The main parameter that determines the necessary materials and parts is the type of structure: collapsible or welded.

Collapsible

For such purposes, it is better to prefer an aluminum profile of square or rectangular shape, while its thickness is determined by the project. For the connection, steel corners can be used, fastened to the profile by means of bolts. A rough list of materials looks like this:

  • profile aluminum pipe with a rectangular section of 80x50 mm and a wall of 3 mm for the base of the structure,
  • profile aluminum pipe with a square section of 80x80 and a wall of 4 mm for structural posts,
  • profile aluminum pipe with a rectangular section of 80x40 and a wall of 3 mm for the top strapping,
  • profile aluminum pipe with a rectangular cross section 80x50 (40) and a wall of 3 mm for rafters and girders of the roof of the gazebo.

Welded

For this type of construction, both steel and aluminum profile pipes are applicable. At the same time, it is better to prefer aluminum for the independent construction of the gazebo. It is easier to process and weld, while only an argon apparatus should be used. In the manufacture of steel arbors, you will need such materials:

  • steel pipe with a diameter of 50 mm for the lower and upper strapping,
  • steel pipe with a diameter of 80 mm or more for arbor posts.

At the same time, the wall thickness of the pipes should be at least 3 mm.

In addition to the basic elements of the frame, you will need rods, staples, sheets of metal for the side walls and roof. Of the tools useful:

  • Bulgarian,
  • screwdriver
  • hammer drill
  • welding machine,
  • building level.

From consumables are also necessary:

  • self-tapping screws
  • drills of different diameters,
  • cement,
  • sifting sand
  • paint and varnish for anticorrosive protection of metal.

Design

When choosing a design, you need to remember that the gazebo is a place of rest, and therefore the first thing that should design its design is calm, relaxation and comfort. The main furniture - a table and chairs, must comply with the general spirit of the structure, and wickerwork is the best choice. If the choice fell on the benches, then it is better to equip them with backs and sheathe wood, and during the feast cover with something soft. An open flame source also has several options. With a light metal gazebo, a barbecue or barbecue is better; in a larger building, you can install a fireplace stove. At the same time, you can position it both at the edge of the gazebo, and in the middle, replacing it with a table. The main material of the structure also leaves a mark on the appearance.

Aluminum allows you to create more compact portable and collapsible gazebos for the street. Also, it does not corrode, and therefore may not be covered by an appropriate composition. Often aluminum is used to make closed arbors with many openable windows in the side projection, which makes it possible to make the building open in summer and at the same time to operate in winter as a closed version. The flexibility of the material allows you to create an element of any shape without much effort, and therefore it is also suitable for design decisions. Also, aluminum is excellent for creating a roof in buildings of a combined type, in which the remaining elements are made of steel.

Forged steel is a very durable material., which during the manufacturing process can take on stunning shapes and be used to create elements that are simultaneously load-bearing and decorative. Pergolas and altankas are often used in their designs. The strength of the material allows you to create "air" arbors of high strength, which can be both open and closed. The former often do not have side rails, and are limited only to columns, creating additional comfort with the ability to leave the arbor without disturbing other vacationers. Forged frames also serve as an excellent basis for grape bushes, which, in turn, provide natural shade and privacy from neighboring eyes. Options without side walls should be mounted on small supports to fix the structure, while fixing the gazebo is better at a certain distance above the ground.

Profile steel pipe - the material is very economical and used for most designs. The design is often simple and unpretentious, angular, can be decorated with geometric shapes formed from the connection of several profile pipes. In the form of such arbors are often square, rectangular and hexagonal. The main difficulty when working with it is the need for a welding machine to work. Mandatory treatment with an anti-corrosion compound is also required, and with an increase in bulk it will require a small foundation.

Metal houses - is there any experience?

Metal products have been used as load-bearing structures for a very long time, numerous shopping centers, skyscrapers are vivid examples of this. True, the technologies and materials used in the construction of such large facilities do not justify themselves in private housebuilding - metal products are very heavy, bulky, they use special welding and riveting technologies to connect individual elements, you can’t build such a house with your own hands.

Everything changed when light steel thin-walled constructions were invented - hereinafter LSTK. For such structures, only thin steel sheets formed in a Z-profile with through grooves or perforations that are supposed to hold back the cold are suitable. This type of LSTK is also called a thermoprofile, and if we talk about private construction, it is advisable to use only it.

Of course, no matter what tricks manufacturers come up with, metal remains a material with high thermal conductivity. This fact in most cases frightens away people who sort out the options for frame houses. The problem is solved by high-quality thermal insulation, which is a multi-layer cake. Calculation of insulation, determination of the dew point should only be carried out by specialists with extensive experience, otherwise you risk getting a lot of problems when operating the house.

The second point that scares consumers away is metal corrosion. Without going into the details of chemical reactions, we all know that metal rusts, including steel. The formation of rust directly affects the strength of the metal structure, in our case, the strength of the "skeleton" of the house. This problem was solved by hot galvanizing, due to which metal structures receive a protective shell with a thickness of 20 microns. With proper installation and providing reliable protection against moisture, it is able to extend the life of the metal up to 100 years!

Useful Tips

In order for a metal garage to serve reliably for many years, it is important not only to draw up its project correctly, to choose high-quality material, but also to observe the construction technology. For owners of vehicles who decide to build their own garage, the following tips from experts can help with this:

It is important to accurately calculate the dimensions of the entire structure and especially pay attention to the height of the building. In the event that it is lower than the neighboring buildings, then the roof may sag over time
In addition, it is advisable to make the roof frame with a slight slope on the back wall.

Reinforce the roof is recommended wooden planks.
After pouring the foundation, you should wait a few days and only then proceed with the installation of the garage.
When choosing professional sheets, you need to pay attention to their brand, and buy material with the designation "C". Such sheets are characterized by increased undulation and strength.
All fastenings should be carried out using special rivets and self-tapping screws.
For the interior decoration of the garage, various finishing materials can be used. It looks beautiful in the design of the garage both wood and panels with imitation stone. Sheathing with these materials will be cheap and the room inside will take on a cozy look.
The color of professional sheets for the garage is selected individually, taking into account the style of other buildings that are located next to it.

On how to make a garage from a professional sheet with your own hands, see the next video.

Tips & Tricks

Experts recommend that when designing a more thorough approach to the question of purpose when designing glazed arbors. For example, the option with barbecue does not provide for large panoramic windows and walls. In this case, the main material of construction should be a material with refractory properties (for example, brick or stone).

It is not always worth giving preference to metal, since the metal glazed arbor will be very hot when frying on an open fire.

When choosing a project for summer cottages made of wood, it is important to consider the rules for caring for the array. It will have to be regularly stained and treated with impregnations from insects and rodents

In addition, it is important to take into account the degree of humidity in the region, as the wood can rot due to constant dampness. Such structures are preferably not used as barbecue or barbecue, as the tree supports combustion

In addition to the correct approach to the choice of material, it is important to think about the location of the gazebo. It should be at a certain distance from the house, but access to it should be convenient

And in this regard, much depends on the landscape features of a particular site.

For example, a structure by the water or artificial pond harmoniously looks. This could be a chalet or fanza style.

The thoughtfulness of the landscape features will allow you to correctly enter even a laconic version of a glazed arbor into it. However, it is desirable that the material of its construction coincides with that of which the house is made

In addition, it is important to consider that harmony does not provide for different stylistic decisions.

Profile pipe

The metal profile is not as expensive as massive wrought iron, but at the same time very reliable.

Choosing the right sizes, you can build a full-fledged metal gazebo at a very nice price - this is the moment we considered in an article about building a gazebo from a profile.

Forged metal

It is this material that is considered the most expensive and elite in the construction of arbors. Any structural elements, such as poles, railings or decorative patterns, will have an impressive weight, since welding does not imply work with thin steel rods.

At the same time, you will get a great place to relax, emphasizing your status and prosperity. In addition, there will be noticeably fewer problems with the metal associated with maintenance, since besides corrosion it can hardly surprise anyone.

Aluminum window profile

Interesting polycarbonate glazing can be done using an aluminum profile. With the help of various types (end, connecting, wall), you can lay out carbonate plates not only on the roof, but also on the walls.

Aluminum glazing

Cellular Polycarbonate

The most popular and cheapest type of polycarbonate at the moment. They mold it anywhere and anywhere. In the summer cottage, its use is not limited - greenhouses, walls on the veranda, garden sheds and so on. Therefore, it is not surprising that in gazebos it found its application as a sheathing material for roofs and walls.

Thanks to the honeycomb structure, in combination with darkened tinting, you can hide from direct sunlight.
In turn, polycarbonate concentrates heat indoors, so if the gazebo is not actively purged with fresh air, you will be very uncomfortable to be inside during the summer in the heat.

Monolithic polycarbonate

The solid structure makes polycarbonate look like glass. Due to this property, monolithic slabs are used for glazing arbors, verandas and other architectural objects.

The color can be selected in accordance with the style of construction or at the request of the owner - transparent, darkened or colored.

Installation of LSTK - we collect the designer!

Building a house from LSTK really looks like building a constructor for children. Before installation, a project of the future home is created - all the little things are thought out in the project, right down to where the furniture and appliances will be installed. It is very desirable that, in addition to the drawing, a 3D project of the house be developed - so the customer will personally see the house.

After the design documentation is completed, the drawings are transferred to the production line. Frame parts are manufactured separately, numbered, packaged and sent to the construction site. Ready-made profiles already have holes for fixtures and utilities. Connecting elements also go in a complex.

With a thermoprofile it is more difficult - in most cases, builders are offered ready-made sizes and shapes that should be considered when designing. It’s best not to change the existing length, not to cut or shorten anything. In any case, each part is packaged and marked, according to the drawings of the house project. Builders will not have to pick up parts - they just need to fasten profiles with their own hands, according to the marking of individual parts. This approach significantly speeds up the construction process.

Building from LSTK is causing more and more interest among modern consumers, thanks to one important advantage - the possibility of free planning. Light trusses allow you to create spans up to 14 meters long without additional support elements

The rooms inside the house are very spacious, free, filled with air.

It should be remembered that the larger the room, the more difficult it will be to heat them, respectively, the better you should insulate the walls with your own hands. Non-combustible mineral wool plates, as well as moisture-resistant polystyrene foam, ecowool have proven themselves best. Although LSTK is not too friendly with other structural materials, it can be easily finished, whether it is a block house imitating a log, or porcelain stoneware, which will give the building the appearance of a solid structure.

Design and calculation of the project

Before you start, you need to eat and calculate all the details. Construction should not bring surprises

Therefore, pay attention to the features of the soil for the construction of the building and the grill in the gazebo, the footage of the necessary pipes or profile for the skeleton, the type of lining, decoration and plants, the presence of additional structures

And of course, it’s worth making a mini estimate and choosing those materials that will fit into the existing budget. After that, make drawings and try to sketch the building. If there is no time for drawing up drawings, then they can be found on the Internet, where there are hundreds of them. Here is an example:

If you are building a gazebo for yourself, this may not seem necessary. But if you are doing it for the client, then schemes, layouts and plans can be supplemented with a 3D model.

Dimensions are made depending on the presence of living people on the site. It is worth considering that it was conveniently located inside people of different complexions. Referring to the norms of SNiP, it is recommended to build a gazebo for giving at least 3 to 3 meters.

What is a profile pipe

The profile pipe, unlike the standard analogue, has no volume. Its feature is ease and practicality. It is made mainly of carbon or low alloy steel. Recently, it is often used in the construction industry.

The shape of the profile pipes can be: • Oval • Rectangular • Flat oval • Square

The most stable form is square

To erect a gazebo from a square shaped pipe, one needs to take into account its positive features: • Lightness • Flexibility • Stability • Increased resistance against corrosion • Easy to connect to other parts of the structure • Not expensive material

Foundation

Since the gazebo is a metal structure, it will be advisable to make the most simple and cheap foundation of blocks. You can make them yourself from a solution of concrete or buy ready-made solid body foundation blocks 20 by 20 by 40 cm.

The foundation of the blocks (the best option for a metal gazebo)

Metal frame welding

Metal welding - the main work in the self-construction of the gazebo

Unlike wood, which can be joined with screws, the metal will have to be cooked. To do this, you will need a welding machine, electrodes and cooking skills.

Bottom harness

Metal pipes are laid on top of the foundation, serving as the basis for the entire structure. The dimensions of the metal should be larger, since the entire mass of the arbor together with people will be kept on the nameplate (the foundation does not count, it is made of concrete).

For the construction of walls, it is necessary to install vertical racks that are welded to the metal of the lower harness. Depending on the size of the gazebo, the number of pillars can radically differ.

For example, for a 3 by 4 meter metal gazebo, the number of racks is 11 pieces (4 on the sides, 2 on the entrance aperture and 1 on the back wall).

Finished 11-pillar frame

If the shape of the building has more than four faces, then each of them will need to install a pillar. This is clearly shown on the hexagonal gazebo (photo below). For a classic square building, the number of racks can be minimal.

Polycarbonate Installation

Sheets of this material can be used for two parts of the gazebo:

  1. Like a roof on a roof.
  2. Like wall cladding.

You can read about installing polycarbonate on the roof in another publication, where we covered this issue in detail. There is an excellent video instruction that will clearly show where to start and how to finish the installation.

Wall cladding is carried out according to a similar technology, installation is also carried out using self-tapping screws with a washer.

What are good and uncomfortable metal arbors?

A variety of designs, shapes and colors, of course, is one of the advantages of such buildings, but this is far from the main plus. Also worth mentioning is durability. After all, metal is not afraid of either fire or water, it is not affected by termites and fungal diseases, which cannot be said about wood. Steel and aluminum elements have anti-corrosion properties. And if you apply another protective coating on them, then more than one generation of cottage owners will rest in them.

Durable metal gazebo

Any kind of foundation is suitable for such arbors, and if you wish, you can don’t fill it at all

Thanks to its refractory properties, it becomes possible to install barbecue inside or nearby without unnecessary precautions. A rigid frame protects the structure from changing geometric shapes due to subsidence, landslides, etc.

e. You can sheathe the sidewalls and cover the roof from any material - slate, polycarbonate, profiled sheet.

Slate roof

However, to build such a gazebo yourself, you must have locksmith skills. Often welding is needed to fix the elements. If you yourself do not know how to use such equipment, then you will need to look for a specialist. The second drawback is the high cost. Even the metal is very hot in the sun, so it is better to install such buildings somewhere in the shade.

1 Metal gazebos: types, pros and cons

Metal is comparable to wood in the popularity of buildings on a summer cottage. Metal buildings have many advantages:

  • durable
  • can be installed on any type of soil,
  • collapsible structures during the transfer are not damaged or deformed,
  • simplicity and speed of assembly,
  • uniqueness of design
  • a wide selection of models: the ability to erect structures of different sizes and shapes,
  • are inexpensive compared to brick and stone counterparts,
  • durable structures that do not require major repairs and replacement of elements during operation.

Iron has two significant drawbacks. Being in open space on a sunny day, the metal heats up and in contact with the skin can damage it. To minimize heating, the summer gazebo is placed under the trees or in the shade of buildings. For the comfort of vacationers, its walls are made openwork.

The second minus is the appearance of rust. To protect against corrosion processes, metal parts are constantly treated with special compounds and painted. True, aluminum products are deprived of this drawback, in addition, they are lighter than iron, but inferior in terms of strength and stiffness.

Reliable welded structures are suitable for the summer cottage. If you need a closed version, the walls are sheathed with material. An open gazebo either does not have fences or is half-sewn by them. You can decorate the structure with climbing plants. Altankas of unusual shapes are gaining popularity: oval, round, octagonal, etc. Buildings differ in styles: modern, eastern.

Preparation for work

A self-made gazebo made from a profile pipe is the acquisition of certain skills in the field of construction. And so that everything goes smoothly, it is necessary to prepare and think through everything in advance.

First of all, we buy metal. Use the following pipe parameters for supports:

• 50 to 50 mm - if the roofing material that you want to use is not slate.
• 75 by 75 mm - if the roofing material is slate.
• 20 by 30 mm - tubes for struts and jumpers.
For a small gazebo three to three meters long, two meters high and a polycarbonate roof, a square shaped pipe will be needed:

1) 50 to 50 mm. Length 13 meters (with a margin).
2) 40 to 40 mm. The length is 15 meters.
3) 20 to 20 mm. Length 6 meters
4) 40 to 20 mm. The length is 30 meters.

Choose the place and shape of the gazebo

An important task is choosing a place. The best arrangement of the gazebo from the profile pipe is not in the area near the house, but not too far away. Four meters from the house - ideal. And make sure that the structure will eventually be visible. It is still a decoration of the courtyard.

The second stage is to determine the shape of the gazebo. Make a drawing. If you are confident in your abilities and possess construction skills. You can build a hexagonal gazebo in an elegant design, as in the photo.

Arbor material and tools

A do-it-yourself gazebo from a profile pipe, made in a budgetary way, can last for many years and does not require additional reconstruction over time. To build it we need:

• Profile pipes (meter depends on the size of the gazebo). Take with a margin.
• Concrete mortar (cement, water, sand)
• Polycarbonate
• Wooden or plastic fittings (of your choice). You may not use it at all.
• Primer or paint

And also you need to have the following tools in your arsenal:

• Electric drill with a set of drills for working on metal
• Bulgarian
• Welding equipment
• Channel beams
• Bayonet shovel
• Self-cutting for metal and terma washers to the color of the finishing material

Types of designs

Metal is the material that allows you to build a relatively modest canopy, and almost a full-fledged house, so you need to start the construction of a metal gazebo with your own hands from a detailed project. However, the drawing cannot be made without a clear idea of what should happen at the output.

Open

For self-construction in the country most often choose open metal arbors. This design is extremely simple - it consists exclusively of supporting pillars, as well as the roof held by them, although the missing walls can be partially replaced by an abundance of living plants or light curtains. The overview turns out to be wonderful, but even for a summer vacation, such a location is not always suitable, because in the rain and with a strong crosswind, the owner and his guests will be uncomfortable here. However, due to its light weight, this structure can easily move to another area.

Closed

Closed constructions, which are also called separate verandas, are an attempt to eliminate the disadvantages of the previous type. There are walls here. So, the lower part is made of sheet metal, and the windows are usually glazed. The entrance may take the form of an empty opening or a full metal door. Thanks to the integral contour, this design is protected from rain and wind, so in the summer you can be here in any weather.

Insulated

Insulated metal gazebos are rare, but still you should not forget about them. It is assumed that although the main walls here are made of metal, they will be additionally insulated from the inside. Finishing materials are often laid on top of the insulation, therefore inside it does not remind anything of the metal essence of the structure. According to the degree of climate comfort in the cold season, this design is inferior to both wooden and brick competitors, but allows for the possibility of relaxation, especially in the presence of heating and barbecue.

Thermal conductivity

Steel is not known for its heat due to its high efficiency in conducting heat. The value of wall insulation can be halved when heat is removed through steel racks, which is not good news for energy conservation in a building. Where steel frame construction is used, insulation measures must be taken to counteract the thermal conductivity of the steel.

Reduced on-site flexibility

One of the advantages of using wooden structural elements is the ability to adjust them in place. The component can be cut to size, hammer in nails to strengthen the connection, and so on. This obviously cannot happen to steel. The dimensions of the steel must be precisely calculated in advance, because the manufacture of steel is delivered to the site in its final form, ready for cutting in the building. This, of course, is one of the great advantages of steel, but if the manufacture for any reason led to an inaccurate component, the project can be suspended while the frame is sent back to the workshop for adjustment. You can avoid this problem by collaborating with a manufacturing company such as GLW, where we take a consultative approach to accuracy and measurement from the very beginning to avoid unpleasant surprises on the spot.

Bearing structures. Profiles for prefabricated buildings

Steel frame structures rarely work on their own. They usually require drywall, cladding, insulation and additional wooden components to integrate the building. According to some construction companies, this longer construction time is an argument against steel frame structures, although usually saving time outweighs any adjustments that need to be made on the spot. The profile of prefabricated buildings is the key to reliability and durability.

Aluminum

The aluminum structure is not bulky, but strong enough. Therefore, portable gazebos are often made from it. This material is not subject to corrosion, therefore, products from it practically do not require additional care. In addition, it is not toxic, and therefore safe for human health.

However, to give a more aesthetic appearance and increase the service life aluminum profile is usually coated with special compounds.

Pergolas made of aluminum are both open and closed. Windows are inserted into products of the second type, which can be hinged or “coupe” type. The material bends well, so it allows you to make structures of various shapes from it. Aluminum is equally suitable for the manufacture of supports and roofs..

Shod arbors

With high-quality performance, forged products withstand significant mechanical stresses, as well as a long service life. Metal for such purposes is either painted or galvanized.

The design of forged arbors can be different. Pergolas are very popular- arbors in the form of an arch, as well as altankawhich differ in a large area and have a different geometric shape.

Wrought iron gazebos can also be in open and closed versions, while both types look great on lawns and summer cottages. Sometimes such designs are done with several outputs. They are very convenient for large companies - you can exit at any time, without disturbing someone sitting nearby.

In the country, usually not too large sections and all the neighbors, as a rule, in full view of each other. Therefore, in an open gazebo it may not be too comfortable, but in a closed gazebo it is too hot.

Alternatively, you can slightly obscure the building with climbing plants. Especially spectacular looks grapes or climbing roses. With this decor, all country landscapes will be before your eyes.

Plants will also protect you from the scorching sun. Some representatives of the flora scare away flies and other insects. If you hang them on the threads in the windows of the gazebo, they can also play a protective role.

Care for wrought gazebos is minimal - it is enough to renew the protective coating once a season. To make the construction durable, during initial installation it is recommended to install it on supports at a certain elevation above the ground cover.

Beautiful examples

You can give a huge number of examples of metal arbors. It can be either an independent detached building, or a building adjacent to the house. The simplest version of the gazebo is a frame made of pipes with a canopy, a plain table and two benches on either side of it.

If the area of the site allows, you can make a more original design - combine under one roof and a place for gatherings, barbecue or barbecue. The roof will reliably shelter the coals from precipitation, and it’s much more convenient to keep an eye on the barbecue without stopping from the general fun.

Wicker rattan furniture looks very nice in the gazebo. In a rocking chair you can take a nap in the fresh air. An alternative to a rocking chair can be a hammock or garden swing, installed next to the table.

A large role in the perception of the appearance of arbors plays the shape of the canopy. The roof covered by color slate looks interesting. If you like complex shapes, you can build an arched forged canopy with a glass ceiling. It will protect against possible rainfall, but will let in sunlight.

Various unusual forms of arbors with curved lines look very unusual - for example, in the shape of a ball. As a rule, this is a closed type of structure in which the frame is made of metal. Polycarbonate can be used as the outer sheathing material.

Beautiful lighting will decorate any building. This will continue friendly gatherings even after sunset. There can also be a lot of lighting options - from the central lamp in the center of the canvas to the LED strip around the perimeter of the gazebo. Moreover, lighting can be launched not only on the top, but also duplicated on the bottom.

The most exotic version of the arrangement of the gazebo is the creation, as its logical extension, of a bridge through an artificial reservoir.
