To create original volumetric designs, there is still no material that could handle this better than drywall. Partitions, interior walls, niches, ledges and ceilings are made of it. Now you can safely create and experiment with forms and configurations. And we will tell you how!
Features of drywall ceilings
Universal drywall is an inexpensive, common and easy to process material. You will save much more money and time on leveling level differences and removing old whitewash. And at the same time, a kitchen set with perfectly even ceilings is much easier to pick up and install.
The box is easily mounted even with your own hands and, if desired, it can be disassembled. An additional layer improves insulation from neighbors from above. To hide the wires and pipes, you don’t have to ditch the ceiling, and even the volumetric ventilation duct can be carefully masked with drywall.
Plastic material easily changes shape: it can even be bent, having previously moistened and notched. This is another way to experiment with space and create original solutions in spacious rooms. The finished structure is completely environmentally friendly, and on top of it you can paint, plaster or sheathe other material.
The main problem of drywall in the kitchen is its sensitivity to moisture. To do this, select special moisture-resistant sheets with the appropriate marking and use water-repellent paint. And at the same time, do not forget about the quality ventilation of the room, but you can’t do without it in the kitchen.
Advantages of GKL ceilings in the kitchen
Specialists highlight a number of main advantages of decoration:
- The ability to eliminate the unevenness of the base base and hide engineering communications without complex work. Since the surface is completely sewn up, there is no need to knock down the protrusions, decorate the pipes and hide the wires - everything will be hidden by the skin.
- With a ceiling height of 2.8 m, both single and multi-level forms are arranged. Illuminated curly ceilings are an original and convenient solution for zoning space for rooms without internal partitions.
- Finishing options. Plasterboard sheets can be painted, whitened, tiled with tiles or other materials, so that there will be no problems with the renewal of the decor.
Insulating materials are placed in the space between the base and the suspended base, lighting is built in, ventilation is an additional advantage of the finish.
As for the shortcomings, they are not, but the masters advise to make a two-level ceiling from drywall in the kitchen only in rooms with a height of 2.8 m, otherwise the design will visually reduce the amount of space and will “overhang”. In rooms with a height of 2.5 m, it is more practical to dispense with single-level systems, it is permissible to make a small box around the perimeter with backlighting - this will solve the problem of aesthetics and additional lighting.
Division of premises into zones
Layered structures are used to separate one area of the room from another, for example, a working kitchen from the dining room.
Decorators offer several finishes:
- place the lower level above the bar, the shape of the box repeats the outline of the bar or can be any other,
- make a box above the working surface and integrate lamps into it, make the upper level in the dining room area smooth and equip with mounted lighting devices,
- transfer the box or figured composition of the second tier to the dining room area, additionally highlighting the design with LED tapes.
There are no restrictions, everything is decided by the imagination of the owner and his capabilities. There are a lot of finishing options, including combining GKL ceilings with stretch sheets, PVC film.
Recessed fixtures
Devices are installed in suspension systems without much difficulty. Attachments in the form of chandeliers, rotary devices, illumination with LED strip are also used - especially often the tape is equipped with boxes around the perimeter of the zone.
A bright and directional beam of built-in lamps is especially appropriate in the working area of the kitchen. Mounted rotary devices are mounted above the bar separator, the spots are easy to adjust and direct the light to the desired part of the room. The LED strip is laid in the shelf of the box, the lower level and due to the soft light gives the space even more comfort.
Advice! If the lighting is supposed to be used as night illumination, it is better to opt for devices with the possibility of changing the beam intensity.
Installation of plasterboard ceilings in the kitchen
All work is divided into several stages:
- preparation of the base surface,
- markup
- frame fixing
- installation of wiring, placement of fixtures,
- sheathing
- finish finish.
Before you make a plasterboard ceiling in the kitchen, you will have to buy materials and check the availability of the right tool. Then inspect the plane and evaluate the integrity of the coating.
If there are no defects, plaster and mold falling off, dust removal is enough for the base, but if there are problems, perform a number of works:
- Remove loose pieces of plaster, expand cracks, seams. Scrub to a concrete base.
- Mold zones should also be cleaned to a concrete base, treated in 2 layers with a solution of copper sulfate or an antiseptic. Impregnate alternately, letting the layers dry.
- Seal cracks and cracks with plaster, large foam with mounting foam. After the foam has dried, cut off the excess.
- Primer the entire surface with a deep penetration composition in 2 layers. First apply the first coat, allow to dry (drying time is indicated on the packaging), then the second - again allow to dry.
After that, you can do the calculation of materials, start marking up.
Materials and tools for work
What is useful to the master:
- drywall sheets,
- Ceiling, guide profiles, U-shaped suspensions,
- crabs connectors
- dowels, self-tapping screws, including short metal screws,
- Anchors
- primer,
- antiseptic
- putty,
- adhesive tape,
- putty knife,
- roller
- hammer drill or drill,
- screwdriver
- scissors for metal,
- masking cord
- planer for chamfering sheets,
- roulette,
- laser and construction level,
- the rule
- pencil,
- needle roller and spray gun (for bending sheets of gypsum plasterboard).
Advice! The kitchen has areas with high and normal humidity. Moisture-resistant gypsum board is suitable for finishing the former - sheets of a thickness of 12.5 mm greenish, the rest of the plane can be sewn with ordinary drywall 9.5 mm thick.
For the arrangement of ventilation, a fan is required, and for illumination - fixtures of the selected type or LED strip.
Ceiling marking
A pre-compiled diagram will simplify the markup process. The plan on a piece of paper is made taking into account the size of the room, the height of the walls - you need to measure all the walls to determine the difference in the distance from the floor to the ceiling. Now, in the lowest corner, postpone the level of lowering, put a mark. Move the mark in all corners, connect the points - the line will become the border of the wall profile fasteners.
Break the base surface in parallel lines with a step of 0.4 m - these are the areas for installing the ceiling profile. Mark the lines at a distance of 0.6 m on the lines - the fixation points of the suspensions. When arranging a two-level system on the wall, draw the horizontal border of the second tier, draw a line of the boundary of the level difference on the ceiling.
Advice! Draw curly, curved borders with mating circles. Snap the center of the circle to the anchor points - this can be one of the corners or the center point of the ceiling.
Frame mounting and wiring
Installing the frame is as follows:
- Fix the guide profile along the border on the wall. The rail will pass along the perimeter of the entire kitchen, fastened to dowels, screws with a step of 0.5 m. The rail will be two if the ceiling is of two tiers.
- At the points on the ceiling, fix the U-shaped suspensions. Fixation on 2 anchors. Bend down perforated suspension ears.
- Cut the ceiling profile into pieces of the required length, make the ends of the rails between the shelves of the guide profile, which is laid on the walls. Fix the central part of the ceiling slats to the ears of the suspensions - fixation with screws.
On a note! To leave the possibility of adjusting the height of the elements, the ceiling rails are not screwed, fixed with the ears of the suspensions. Fasteners will be held after alignment horizontally.
- Cut the transverse strips for the ceiling from PP slats. Mount jumpers on both sides of the ceiling profile, fasteners on crabs without fixing to suspensions.
- The first level is ready, and for the second one, attach a guide rail to the frame along the boundary of the level difference. In the guide element, install short rails, the length of which is equal to the height of the edge, screw with screws. On the bottom of the racks, fix the lower guide element.
- Insert the cut ceiling rails into the grooves of the profile on the walls for the second level and along the lower boundary of the level difference so that they pass along the suspensions of the upper tier - this will ensure the strength of fastening.
- Jumpers of the lower level are mounted in the same way.
As soon as the frame of all levels is assembled, the wiring for the lamps and the fan is laid out on the base base. A corrugated hose is used for installation, reducing the risk of fire in the event of a wiring closure.
Plasterboard Ceiling and Lighting Installation
It is necessary to sew up the ceiling from drywall with the backlight in the kitchen from the corner or center - first the whole sheets are laid out, then trimmed.
Advice! Before starting the decoration in the elements, cut holes for the fixtures. It is most convenient to make holes with a drill with a nozzle of the right size.
The joints of the sheets are laid out so that the adjacent seam is in the middle of the profile. The adjacent rows should be displaced by the end joints by the step of the ceiling rail so that 4 adjacent corners of the sheets do not meet at one point. Fixing plates for short self-tapping screws with drowning the caps in the material by 1 mm. Care should be taken not to damage the top sheet. Twist the screws along the perimeter in increments of 150 mm, indent from the edge of 20 mm. In the center, the fastener pitch is 250 mm.
Important! If the bevel is not chamfered, apply a planer. Chamfer to shoot at an angle of 22 degrees, this is necessary to simplify the sealing of joints and joints. Do not touch sheets with factory processing.
When making curved forms, drywall will have to be bent. To do this, cut the part into strips of the desired width, spray from the back with a spray gun and roll with a needle roller - the material will soften and conveniently bend without creases into the desired shape.
Mount the fixtures and fan after assembling the ceiling. First, connect the lighting fixtures to the wires, then insert it into the hole and fix it with spacers, the fan is built into the ventilation duct or attached to the GKL sheets. When installing the device in the general ventilation channel in a false ceiling, equip the grill, and to attach the device directly to the filed, place a strong plywood base on the back of the element.
It is more convenient to lay out the LED strip on the ceiling in the kitchen with a box, if the strip is with an adhesive base. In this case, it is only necessary to remove the protective paper, then put the tape on the shelf and press it a little.
The final finish of the ceiling plane
After filing sheets, prepare the surface for cladding. The seams are covered with a thin layer of putty, then reinforced with a sickle - put the tape in a damp composition along the length of the seams, so that the joint itself falls in the middle of the sickle. After reinforcing, lay out another thin layer of putty, align. Close the self-tapping hats with putty, level the composition. After drying the mixture, sand the surface with a fine abrasive sandpaper.
Advice! Before painting, the entire plane of the ceiling is putty and leveled. Putty putty in a thin layer, stretch with a spatula, achieving perfect evenness of the surface.
After the composition dries, the surface is ready for tiling, wallpaper, film or staining. Paints are selected based on latex, water-dispersed mixtures. With a little patience, time, you will get a beautiful plasterboard ceiling in the kitchen with lighting, photos from decorators will help you choose the best finish.
Preparatory stage
- It is necessary to provide for the connection of the hood to the duct,
- Decide on the model of built-in lamps on the eve of installation, since the height of the devices is different and affects the distance between the drywall and the floor slab,
- Preliminary planning in the room will allow you to understand what shape will be appropriate in the interior and determine the optimal dimensions of the structure,
- The color is selected in advance, as well as the material (only GKLV sheets or in combination with tension material).
Plasterboard single level ceilings
This is a simple laconic box of minimum height, which gives an even horizontal coating. In fact, its main task is to hide defects, level differences and communications. This is a good alternative to stretch linens if for some reason they do not suit you. The entire installation consists in creating a frame from a metal profile and its sheathing with plasterboard sheets.
Single level
The simplest option is suitable for rooms of any shape and area. The top coat can be painted or plastered. Visually, such a ceiling can not be distinguished from the usual, however, all the advantages of a suspended structure will be taken into account.
In addition to masking pipes, electricians, or installing fixtures (due to the distance between the drywall and the base of the floors), this design also allows visual zoning if the surface is painted in different shades or a different texture is used to indicate a specific area. For example, over the dining area we choose a light gamut, and in the area of the working corner we paint the surface in a saturated tone. This technique will highlight the dining part and make it an emphasis on the whole room.

Duplex
Due to two levels, it is easier to design a room’s interior effectively, to solve technical problems that arise during the repair of a room. Under the ceiling, you can hide large parts, such as duct elements and massive fixtures (built-in part).
The outlines of the protruding elements can be any, it all depends on the idea of the future interior. Sometimes rectangular and oval shapes are combined; stretch ceilings are also made with GKLV.

In this kitchen, a plasterboard protrusion was combined with a glossy stretch material. This technique is often used in repair practice.
The combination of plasterboard construction with stretch ceiling
Due to competent lighting, you can visually increase the height of the room - to create a "soaring" effect. To do this, leave a gap around the perimeter and lay the LED strip. This solution is also great for kitchens with a small area.
Mounting Methods
1.Hanging. In this case, first install a special system consisting of suspensions (for example, thick wire, rods or brackets). Next, we attach the frame to the suspensions, which is most often formed from metal elements (sometimes wooden).
2. Filing. In this embodiment, the frame is fixed on the base (floor slabs). Due to the hemming method of fastening, the design is the most durable and rigid.
3. Combined. Combine the hemming and hanging methods. This option is most convenient when creating multiple levels.
Combinations can be different not only by installation method, but also by materials. For example, you can make a wooden surface over the central part of the room, and mount a box made of gypsum plaster along the perimeter of the room. This combination will complement the interior of the kitchen in the style of a loft or country.
Advantages and disadvantages of GKLV ceilings
Pros:
- Mask the technical details of the repair,
- Allows you to hide surface defects (on the eve of installation, you do not need to level the base),
- Visualize the space
- Give a complete attractive look to the interior,
- Do not depend on changes in humidity and temperature (provided that high-quality material is selected),
- Behind the sheets you can hide the heat and sound insulators,
- Drywall sheets - the basis for a multivariate design,
- During operation, the color can be changed,
- Resistant to moderate mechanical stress. If the structure is partially damaged by a strong impact or flood, then you can replace the affected fragment with a new one without completely dismantling the ceiling.
Minuses:
- The total height in the room is reduced (from 70 mm or more),
- Installation should be entrusted to an experienced construction team,
- Due to the shrinkage of new buildings, cracks may appear at the junctions of GKLV elements,
- A high-quality final finish is needed to make the seams invisible.
Which drywall to choose
The kitchen is a specific room in which, due to sudden changes in temperature and humidity, it is necessary to use building materials with special characteristics, including:
- strength,
- durability,
- fire safety
- moisture resistance
- breathability
- environmental friendliness
- compatibility with various finishing materials - primer, putty, paints.
Choosing drywall in the kitchen, you should study in detail the technical characteristics of the material. It is advisable to buy gypsum plasterboard intended for ceilings, since they have less weight and thickness compared to wall sheets, which is especially important when installing two- and three-level suspended ceilings. For example, the thickness of the ceiling gypsum board of the famous Knauf brand is 0.95 cm. For a single-level design, gypsum board for walls is suitable.
The necessary parameter of drywall in the kitchen is moisture resistance. Standard drywall is not suitable for rooms where clouds of steam constantly float and air temperature often reaches critical values. It is worth looking for moisture resistant material (GKLV), which includes hydrophobic and fungicidal additives that exclude the appearance of dangerous microorganisms and molds. You can choose drywall (GKLVO), which has high moisture and fire resistance. Sheets of both types are painted green, fire and moisture-resistant drywall in addition to the specific color is provided with a red marking.
Important! The ceiling in the kitchen from drywall after sealing the joints with putty and sickle, must be covered with a deep penetration primer to ensure good adhesion to the wallpaper or even application of paint and to protect the surface from damage and damage by microorganisms for a long time.
Design features of GKL ceilings in the kitchen
To think over the design of the ceilings made of moisture-proof drywall in the kitchen is the most difficult task for a novice master, since with the existing variety of shapes and configurations it is quite difficult to choose the best option. Small cramped Khrushchevs with ceiling heights of just over 2 meters differ in the truly microscopic size of the kitchen, where it is almost impossible to realize bold ideas about a multi-level construction. Nevertheless, there are many ways to decorate a single-level suspended ceiling from GKL and even make a two-level design that will not only not weight the interior, but will also give it an airy lightness.
- In spacious modern apartments with huge kitchens, you can give free rein to the imagination, while not deviating too much from the general concept. Designing an apartment in a classic and any other style requires a similar reception in the kitchen - a high-tech interior should not be combined with classic or ethnic style.
- Multilevel ceilings made of moisture-proof drywall in the kitchen are popular, the design of which is distinguished by curly built-in and suspended elements that make up a harmonious pictorial composition.
- The combination of a multi-tiered figured suspended ceiling with fragments of a stretch looks attractive. A photograph of a gourmet dish, coffee beans, flower arrangement is one of the common elements of the decor of combined plasterboard ceilings with stretch canvas.
Color and design of a single-level plasterboard ceiling in a small kitchen
An important role in the design of a single-level ceiling is played by the color palette. Here are some tips for using and combining colors:
- It is advisable to deviate from the traditional snow-white in favor of soft pastel colors, combined with the color of walls, floors, furniture, equipment.
- White trim in the form of light ceiling skirtings emphasize the elegance of decoration.
- Bright colors when decorating the ceiling in a small kitchen are better left for emphasis or not at all.
- The use of contrasting shades is desirable to exclude.
- The predominance of light shades in monochrome tones visually expands the cramped kitchen space.
- The ceiling looks wonderful, the central part of which is painted with glossy paint, and the edges are matte to match the walls.
Any options are available: you can divide the kitchen ceiling into two unequal parts, separating them with a straight or wavy line, create an abstract or floral pattern on the ceiling from fragments painted with matte and glossy paint. The only condition is that the paints must be matched in a monochrome palette. Photos of ceilings from professional dizaners made of drywall for the kitchen will help you choose the best solution.
Single Level Lighting
Interesting ideas for organizing lighting:
- A single-level suspended ceiling in the kitchen will not look corny, if you combine the spot lighting zones with two or three ceiling lights with flat shades.
- Point devices can be arranged in rows, which will visually expand the room, or around the main fixtures, giving the room a touch of originality.
Drywall ceiling with spotlights illuminated above the dining table, stove, sink or dishwasher, creates the effect of zoning a small space.
- Especially advantageous is the backlight in the form of a semicircle, a wavy or broken line.
- A harmonious combination of ceiling and lighting with a kitchen apron emphasizes the unity of style.
Design of a two-level ceiling in a small kitchen
A two-level plasterboard suspended ceiling in a small apartment fits perfectly into the kitchen interior if the base level occupies a significant part of the surface, and the second serves as a kind of bordering the base and the location of the backlight. Between the first and second tiers there are usually niches for hidden illumination with an LED strip, while spotlights cut into the surface of the second level.
Note! The color of the lighting should be in harmony with the color of the ceiling and wall levels.
Particularly attractive is the figured second level, made in the form of a circle, star, ellipse, oval, wave.
The combination of colors of the ceiling structure depending on the lighting and interior styles
When choosing the color of paint or wallpaper for suspended ceilings, it is necessary to take into account such factors as the illumination of the room, depending on the location of the cardinal points.
- Mediterranean, Japanese, African, Indian styles in the interior significantly benefit from the location of the apartment and, accordingly, the kitchen on the south, southeast, east side.
- The combination of soft green and jade, turquoise and aqua, golden sand and light yellow, cobalt and light blue shades look great in bright sunlight, but they do not look the best in a dark room located on the north side.
- The western sun emphasizes the vivid immediacy of the folklore style, the romanticism of the Provence style, the rigor of the Scandinavian or English styles. They have the advantage of suspended plasterboard ceilings painted in cream, beige, peach, cocoa, terracotta, coral.
- Layered constructions in spacious kitchens look great in bright contrasting combinations of achromatic palette.
How to surface GKL ceilings in the kitchen
After preliminary preparation, plasterboard ceilings in the kitchen can be pasted with non-woven wallpaper or glass. Vinyl wallpapers are better not to use because of their air tightness and possible condensation.
For staining, it is advisable to choose water-based formulations - water-based or water-dispersed, giving them the desired color using a tint. The ceiling of drywall in the kitchen can be painted with acrylic, latex, water-based, silicone compounds. The use of oil paints is strongly discouraged.
Layered Plasterboard Ceilings
This is a more complex frame structure in which each new level is built on top of the previous one. This is a great option for zoning and mounting integrated spotlights. When installing, the main thing is to clearly calculate the location of the suspensions and close all the edges with special corners.
Pendant lights
Modern pendant lights are not limited to classic chandeliers. From them you can create whole compositions or zoning the room. For example, highlight the dining area by installing several loft lamps on suspensions of different lengths above the table.
When installing pendant lighting, consider the fragility of drywall sheets that are not designed for mechanical stress. For lightweight devices, specialized butterfly dowels that redistribute weight are sufficient. Heavier models are best fixed directly to the metal profiles of the frame.
The most difficult thing is to install classic massive chandeliers with metal details and crystal pendants. It is best to screw them directly to the concrete ceiling base. And then bring it out with extension pins and close the outlet with a decorative outlet.
Spotlights
Spotlights are built into the plasterboard ceilings in the kitchen in a series. For example, along the perimeter, in different zones, along individual elements of a multi-level structure. They give a more even and comfortable light than one central chandelier.
Different collections differ in shape, size and configuration, and lamps in brightness and intensity. Make sure that the lighting in the kitchen is kept at the same temperature, otherwise it will irritate and tire your eyes. Choose a lamp with additional protection against moisture and dust.
Spot lighting is best suited for zoning, the more it can be combined with other species. Smooth rows along the walls will help to visually enlarge the room - this is a good choice for small kitchens. For installation, it is enough to cut the slots in the drywall with a special nozzle for a drill, fix the wires in the terminals and insert the lamp into the socket.
Hidden backlight
In multi-level and "soaring" plasterboard ceilings, hidden lighting is often used. It looks as if the design is illuminated from the inside. Most often this is an LED strip that hides in a special groove around the perimeter. In order for the light to be distributed evenly, the height of such a niche should be at least 15 cm.
Decorative lighting
For different decorative effects and creating an atmosphere, LEDs and neon are used in different shades and with different dynamic effects. This is a good option for spacious kitchens where parties and parties are sometimes held. Such lighting immediately transforms the interior and creates a fun, laid-back atmosphere.
The advantages of LED strips are ease of installation and a large working resource. An interesting alternative is transparent duralight cords with colored lights inserted inside. But if the LEDs can give specific, but full lighting, then the power of the duralight is too low for this.
Installation of plasterboard ceiling in the kitchen
If you have never had experience in construction and repair work, it is better to contact professionals for the installation of plasterboard ceilings.Incorrectly fixed frame, lack of suspensions, wrong fasteners or uneven load distribution - all this is fraught with subsidence and even collapse of the structure.
Fragile drywall requires careful handling, because it is easy to break and damage. Do not use cracked sheets even after processing with mortar or glue. The result will still not be strong enough and reliable.
In addition to conventional and waterproof, drywall sheets are fireproof, high strength, without cardboard and gypsum fiber. The set of tools for installation works is extremely simple: you will need metal profiles, suspensions, fasteners, a level, a square, a tape measure, a hacksaw, a drill and a screwdriver with different nozzles, a stepladder and a pencil.
Along the perimeter of the room, guide profiles are mounted, and in them - perpendicular carriers. Complex multi-level and figured constructions must first be delineated. Profiles are fixed to the ceiling with special U-shaped suspensions. They are available immediately with holes for ease of installation and level control.
Screw the frame to the wall with a step of 30-40 cm, and the suspensions to the ceiling with a distance of 60-70 cm. The maximum step between the screws with which you screw the sheets to the profile is 15-20 cm. To prevent drywall, crack from the edge of the sheet approximately by 15 mm.
Before sheathing, lay pipes, wires and other communications in the frame. Directly make the wiring, stretch the wires to the switch and release the ends under the lights. And do the holes for them as you lay the sheets - this is more convenient than drilling a fully finished ceiling. And if something goes wrong, the damaged sheet can still be easily replaced.
Plasterboard sheets are screwed to the frame strictly perpendicular or parallel, and all joints and joints are sealed with reinforcing tape and putty. After that, all places are erased with sandpaper and polished, and then you can proceed to the exterior finish.
Before filling the joints, wait a few days until the structure completely settles down. Clean and moisten the joint lines and fill them with the mounting mixture. After that, press the reinforcing tape into it and once again plaster over it.
For external coating, special enamels and hydrophobic paints are best suited. You can tighten the surface with PVC film: it is not afraid of moisture, stains and odors, it is easy to clean. The elements pasted over with a film will interestingly decorate a multi-level design.
Drywall ceilings for a small kitchen
When arranging a small kitchen, remember that a drywall box inevitably reduces the height of the room. Of course, even a single-level one will hide all irregularities, defects and communications. But if your ceilings are too low, these 6-10 cm may be important.
False and false plasterboard ceiling
Drywall - a material consisting of a layer of gypsum between two sheets of building cardboard. Conventional, moisture resistant, fireproof, reinforced and other types of GCR are produced. Since the main damaging factor in the kitchen is dampness and the effect of steam, they choose a moisture-resistant option.
The quality of GKL that is interesting for design is the flexibility that is exploited with might and main when creating all the architectural elements in the apartment: columns, arches, partitions and, of course, the ceiling surface - in the living room, in the bedroom or in the nursery. But drywall alone is not a structural material.
False ceiling combines the capabilities of the frame and GKL:
- the frame is constructed from several types of metal profiles. It is a grill mounted on the wall - in the guide profile, and on the ceiling - with U-shaped suspensions. This design allows you to hide the communication behind the plasterboard surface, mask any imperfections in the base ceiling and give the room an unusual shape - for example, an arched ceiling,
- GCR - the material is hemmed from the bottom to the frame. And since drywall is very flexible, they can sheathe voluminous figures of any shape. The material itself is easily painted, glued, plastered and so on.
False gypsum board ceilings differ from false ceilings by the absence of suspensions. Here, the frame is a crate that attaches directly to the surface. It takes away the minimum height of the room - 5-10 cm, but its decorative capabilities are much lower.
Advantages and disadvantages
If it’s decided to give the kitchen or living room an aesthetic original look and it’s not a pity for the time spent, the do-it-yourself ceiling made of drywall will be the perfect solution. Both the frame and the gypsum board are lightweight materials, the profile and sheets can be cut and bent in any way, and almost any finish is possible here.
In addition, other advantages are inherent in the gypsum board kitchen ceiling:
- moisture resistance - choose a special material marked in green. He is not afraid of direct contact with water and is resistant to dampness,
- in any case, drywall is not susceptible to mold or rot,
- non-combustible material and does not melt under the influence of temperature - excellent quality for the kitchen, and it will not be superfluous in the living room,
- suspended ceiling in the kitchen will hide all the flaws of the base surface, and at the same time hide all communications - from wiring to air ducts,
- material is relatively durable: it’s clear that he can’t stand the blow with a sharp object, but the cork blow from champagne is for sure,
- Moreover, suspension system easy to repair: The damaged sheet is removed and replaced with a new one. The same can be done with a damaged suspension or profile,
- the design of drywall ceilings in the kitchen is extremely diverse: decorative design features are a separate section,
- installation is really easy. Difficulties are caused by the calculation, since it will be necessary to create a drawing here, and calculate the number of different profiles, and the load, and so on. The installation itself is not so much complicated as it takes time.
The disadvantages of the solution are as follows:
- Installation takes time. And if a complex project is chosen, then without appropriate experience it’s better not to get down to business, but entrust the installation to an experienced master: skewing of the frame or poor finish of the joints can lead to deformation of the whole structure
- painting works here are required and quite tiring: you need to close the seams, putty and putty the surface in order to achieve a perfectly smooth surface and so on,
- it is undesirable to install a drywall construction in a new house: when the walls and floors shrink, the frame will lead and cracks and tears may appear on the surface of the gypsum board.
Plasterboard kitchen ceiling design
Modern beautiful ceilings are a pretty loose concept. Appearance and design should correspond to the style, and it dictates rather strict restrictions. So the plasterboard ceiling can fully reveal its capabilities only in a few rooms of the dwelling - in the kitchen, living room and bedroom.
Layered Designs
As mentioned, the frame for the system is a profile grating, fixed to the ceiling by suspensions. However, the biggest advantage of this design is that such a frame can be multi-level, since the crate can be easily hung at any distance from the ceiling or attached to the frame of the previous level.
And this opens up tremendous opportunities for the design of plasterboard ceilings in the kitchen.
1. Single-level - if the room’s height is small or a classic style is chosen for decoration, it is better to limit yourself to a single-level design. In this way, a classic ceiling surface with perfect smoothness and evenness is obtained. But at the same time, there may be built-in lighting, and a chandelier, and backlight.
To build such a design is the easiest. It does not require any complex calculations.
2. Two-level - extremely diverse. In this case, the frame of the second is mounted on the frame of the first level in the form of geometrically regular or smoothly outlined or asymmetric figures. Design is selected in accordance with the requirements of the style:
- classic - quite modest. However, the ceiling niche - round or oval, without a doubt, will decorate both the kitchen and the living room. The niche should be exactly in the center, since it is important for the style to maintain central symmetry. Another option is a box around the perimeter of the room in order to visually increase the height of the room,
- Baroque - suggests a greater wealth of design, while the forms remain the same, for example, painting, or even a stretch colored canvas in the ceiling niche. However, there is another option, suitable for tall rooms, especially the kitchen combined with the living room - an imitation of the coffered ceiling. In this case, a narrow drywall box is installed, reproducing the caisson,
- Art Nouveau - the ceiling in the kitchen from drywall can have the most different, most complex configuration, but always with smooth outlines and asymmetric. This style does not accept rigid correctness. The figure of the second level can be placed anywhere - above the dining area or above the working one, in the center, next to a short wall - to correct the proportions of the room. Moreover, its shape can be arbitrarily complex: from a simple teardrop-shaped design to an abstract or recognizable image - the sun, a snake, a flower in a frame, and so on,
The kitchen is utilitarian, decorating it is quite difficult. A ceiling with asymmetric curved shapes will ideally solve this problem.
- Provence and country - its usual feature is the ceiling beams. Gypsum plasterboard perfectly reproduces them. In a small room, it makes sense to place the boxes parallel to the short wall in order to expand the space, in a large box they can occupy only part of the room - for example, above the work area, so that the dining room is highlighted with a “smooth” front ceiling,
- techno and constructivism - the complexity of the configuration can be no less than in the interior of the Art Nouveau style, but here the outlines of the figures will be geometrically correct. The technique of multiple duplication is very interesting. Small elements against the background of a large one, for example: a series of ceiling square niches in the figure of the second level. But the color scheme is the most modest: the form is more important than color,
- hi-tech - differs in that it allows the use of figures of smooth outlines - an oval, a semicircle or a segment of a circle. Geometric correctness is maintained, but highlighting is allowed: for example, a red stretch canvas in a box in the form of a circle in the center of the kitchen,
- Futurism combines figures with rigid and smooth irregular shapes. Highlighting is allowed, but much more interesting is the plasterboard ceiling with backlight. It is used especially actively and can be colored.
3. Layered - The stylistic requirements for it are the same, but the complexity of the figures and the structural complexity of the project can be much higher. Doing such a ceiling in the kitchen with your own hands is much more difficult. In addition, the project can only be realized with a high room height: each level takes at least 10 cm.
4. Combined - at least a two-level ceiling, in which part of the frame is not sheathed with gypsum plaster, but is decorated with a stretch fabric - PVC film. This solution is perfect for the kitchen, since the film is water resistant, but, however, applies to combustible substances. But its decorative possibilities are huge.
GKL finish
The drywall sheet itself is of little interest and, in addition, its moisture-proof version is green, so that at least the surface is puttyed. Well, then proceed to finish.
- Staining. GKL holds paint excellent. Moreover, you can not just paint the sheet with one color, but also choose the texture - matte, glossy, "metal" or paint a fragment of the ceiling. This solution is completely individual. Of course, you won’t translate a photograph on drywall, but with the appropriate abilities, it is quite possible to make an even more realistic image. You can use moldings to highlight rosettes or other decorative elements.
- Pasting. Wallpapers have not been a relevant choice for a long time, but it depends on the interior. For example, in the Provence style, plasterboard boxes depicting ceiling beams are papered with detergent wallpapers with a wood pattern. The effect is wonderful. However, today thermofilm is more often used, since it is easier to stick on it, and its decorativeness is higher: it reproduces not only the pattern or texture of natural material, but also the image.
- Plaster. Any plaster is suitable: Venetian, textured, silk and even mosaic. So, for the Baroque or classical style, a Venetian imitating marble is chosen, and in a non-strict hi-tech fragment framed with mosaic plaster it looks rather nontrivial.
- Tile is a somewhat radical solution, in which the kitchen begins to resemble a bathroom. However, with the right choice - for example, a combination of color and mirror tiles, this option can look very impressive.
Lighting issue
One of the advantages of the drywall design is the ability to mount a variety of lighting. Before deciding how to make a ceiling, you need to carefully consider the lighting: it is an excellent design tool that should not be neglected.
- Backlight - LED, as a rule, a tape fixed on the edge of the second level or in a niche obtained between the first and second level. Most often use a neutral white backlight. But it can be colored, especially in the style of techno or futurism.
- Recessed fixtures - from tiny spotlights to pretty solid ones. Their main attraction is in placement at the level of the ceiling plane or slightly lower: such light concentrates on the illuminated area and does not create partial shadows and glare.
- Suspended devices - chandeliers and all kinds of lamps. Their role is similar to that of a lighting fixture in a conventional kitchen.
It is quite possible to combine all the methods in order to create multi-level lighting when each section of the kitchen is illuminated by its own group of appliances. It is not only more economical, but also much more spectacular.
Another advantage of the GCR is the ability to use any lamp - from incandescent to LED. GCR does not respond to heat, so it suffers proximity even with incandescent halogen lamps.
Plasterboard ceilings - a universal solution for any room: small and spacious, with a high ceiling or low, with the right proportions or the most inappropriate form - with niches or arches.
